Uno de los títulos más representativos de la vasta producción del denominado maestro del terror cósmico, el estadounidense Howard Phillips Lovecraft (18901937). Nadie como él ha sabido combinar el relato de terror con la ciencia ficción. Creador de una mitología propia los mitos de Cthulhu, desarrollada en colaboración con otros autores y aún vigente, fue un elucubrador sin igual de civilizaciones prehumanas. Su obra, de base materialista, se aparta de la temática tradicional (satanismo, fantasmas), incorporando elementos de ciencia ficción como razas alienígenas, viajes en el tiempo y la existencia de otras dimensiones. Discípulo de Edgar Allan Poe, su continuador más destacado sería Stephen King. Con La llamada de Cthulhu, Lovecraft nos ofrece una de las primeras visiones de ese terror cósmico que exploraría a lo largo de toda su obra.
La Vuelta al Mundo en Ochenta Días es quizás la obra mejor conocida del escritor francés y futurista Julio Verne (1828 -1905). La novela narra las aventuras del gentleman británico Phileas Fogg y su mayordomo francés, Picaporte, mientras intentan darle la vuelta al mundo en ochenta días para ganar una apuesta con el Reform-Club de Londres. La novela fue un gran éxito comercial y ayudó a Verne a alcanzar reconocimiento mundial y sus obras se convirtieron en sinónimo de intrépidas aventuras, ciencia y futurismo. Julio Verne es considerado hoy en día uno de los precursores de la ciencia ficción y un hombre adelantado a su tiempo.
El escritor británico H.G. Wells (1866-1946) fue uno de los pioneros en el género de la ciencia ficción, considerado, junto a Julio Verne, como el padre de este género literario. Gracias a su gran conocimiento científico, Wells consigue unir ciencia y ficción en sus novelas, sumergiendo al lector en mundos futuristas salidos de los posibles avances científicos. Así, obras como La máquina del tiempo, nos trasladan a mundos futuristas en los que la ciencia logra uno de los hitos soñados: el viaje en el tiempo. Así, el protagonista de esta historia, cuenta cómo, gracias a una máquina que él mismo inventó, es capaz de viajar a través del espacio y el tiempo, y narra las aventuras que ha vivido gracias a ello.
